Me: Middle aged university educated white man
In November, just two days before the US election i wrote a short comment in anticipation of what i then believed to be a likely Hillary Clinton win:
"If Donald Trump looses there is no reason to be jubilant for Hillary Clinton. There needs to be mobilisation that brings together both environmental champions and social activists in order to create a just and inclusive future. We need both the grassroots, the science geeks and the innovators and we need them now”
Tonight, after Marine le Pen has been thoroughly defeated by Emanuel Macron in the French election, it is time for a moment of relief. The populist and rightwing tide that we saw in both the Brexit vote and in Trumps unjustful promotion to the US presidency (he did after all loose the popular vote) seems to have been rolled back. Luckily, the kind of involvement by obscure actors that we saw in the US election, with smearing campaigns and hacker attacks seems to have had little influence in France. The result was partly due to Macrons attractiveness as a young and fresh politician, not burdened by the failures of both the socialist and the republican parties in France. But the outcome of the election was also to a large extent a "No" vote agains Le Pen and her nationalist and xenophobic agenda.
The immediate fear of a Frexit can be put aside and the EU is likely to prevail with France and Germany continuing as the core of the union. But the challenges are still there and while the angry nationalists come up with all the wrong answers some of the symptoms they try to exploit needs to be addressed. Leaders in many of our liberal democracies have failed to grasp the effects of globalisation and likewise failed to provide a vision of future that is fair, equitable and truly sustainable. And with sustainable, I mean something that really addresses the profound climate crisis we are in, not some kind of superficial green makeover that lulls us into thinking all is well.
So for the moment let’s pin our hopes for Europe to Macron and the visions he pointed to in his victory speech, on a future for both France and the world where the old french slogan “Liberté, égalité, fraternité” can be revitalised in a way that is benign to our environment. But what we must understand is that democracy is not about voting every 4th or 6th year. Neither is it about the kind of quasi-democratic and dumbing “yes or no”, “in or out” type of referendum that seems to be so popular with the right-wing nationalists.
No, if we want a just future in a world with a liveable climate we better start thinking about what we can do and how we can contribute to a better future. It was encouraging that Macron actually talked about our joint responsibilities. But it is up to us as citizens to understand that is better if our politicians underpromise and overperform, rather than listen to and be attracted by the lure of snake oil salesmen and women like Erdogan, Le Pen and Trump. The track record if we are fooled to put theses people in office is horrifying as we can see in the now “illiberal” democracy in Hungary. We deserve a better future, we will not get it without efforts.
Det har gått två veckor sedan det amerikanska valet och insikten om att President Trump kommer att flytta in i Vita Huset har sjunkit in. Jag har läst många olika analyser av valutgången, varför det blev som det blev och vad vi kan vänta oss framöver. Mer om det strax. Jag vill börja med att reflektera över några svenska kommentarer, som närmast skadeglatt uttalat något i stil med "nu minsann ser ni hur det går om vi inte tar itu med invandring och mångkultur, nu är det dags att börja prata med SD, så går det när man inte lyssnar på folket”. Jag tänker då inte på de sverigedemokrater som av naturliga skäl gläds åt Trumps framgång, något som de gör tillsammans med sina likasinnade i Front National mfl populistiska partier i Europa. Nej jag syftar på mediamänniskor, opinionsbildare och skribenter på den svenska högerkanten som regelmässigt tar strid mot genuspedagogik och andra förhatliga hot mot det svenska folkhemmet. Allt väl exemplifierat i detta inlägg från Facebook, twittrat och retweetat många gånger om under de senaste dagarna.
Vilket tillbaka vi skall tillbaka till, ja det kan man undra och det låter sig bäst beskrivas av denna sketch med Galenskaparna.

Humor behövs i svåra tider men också analys och insikt. I de många artiklar jag läst de senaste dagarna så finns det olika teman som lyfts fram som förklaring till Trumps framgång. Det är en komplex bild, långt från identitetsbaserad plakatretorik. Utan den nödvändiga förståelsen kommer det att vara svårt att möta hotet från Trump och hans gelikar i Europa och Sverige. För det hotet måste tas på fullaste allvar, att Trump nu låter något mildare än under valkampanjen bör inte minska vår vaksamhet. Demokrati är bräckligare än vad vi kanske trott, som Maciej Zaremba skriver i DN baserat på vad som hänt i Polen det senaste året.
De som blivit lugnade av Trumps försoningstal borde läsa vad Jaroslaw Kaczynski sade efter sin seger i det polska valet. Det var nästan samma ord: låt oss nu bli vänner och samarbeta för nationens bästa. Två månader senare, så fort de fått makten, gick hans parti Lag och rättvisa (PIS) till angrepp mot rättsväsendet och gjorde stats-tv till partiorgan. Ett år senare är Polen inte längre en rättsstat.
Var det ekonomiskt marginaliserade väljare som lyfte fram Trump?
Det finns betydande grupper inom USAs “Rust belt” som inte tagit del av den ekonomiska utvecklingen under det senaste decenniet. För dem har den liberala marknadsekonomin och globaliseringen inte inneburit några vinster och USAs brist på sociala skyddssystem har lämnat dem i sticket. Detta har bland annat Naomi Klein, författare "Shock Doctrine och "This Changes Everything” pekat på.
Schablonbilden av att det framför allt är “white trash” som röstade på Trump stämmer dock inte. Tvärtom så fanns det både högutbildade och höginkomsttagare här.
Perhaps, then, these Trump voters are the most deplorable of them all. They’re not suffering or desperate, and have no concrete reason to hate the status quo or to feel like they are in decline. They understand that Trump is manifestly unprepared to be president, have heard his many lies and insults, yet voted for him anyway. And without them, Trump wouldn’t have won.
Att både Brexit och Trumps framgångar är kombinationen av motstånd mot invandring och auktoritära tendenser har förts fram som en stark förklaring. Om detta skulle vara enda sanningen är det dock svårbegripligt varför Kalifornien, en av de delstater som har störst invandring röstar så tydligt demokratiskt. Kanske frågor som kultur, ekonomisk framgång och förändringsvilja är starkare här och gör att främlingsfientlighet inte får samma fäste. Att rasism kan vara en tydligt bidragande faktor verkar vara svårt för vissa svenska skribenter att acceptera. Det är däremot något som många bland “people of colour” i USA tidigt uppfattade, dvs de människor som redan är utsatta.
Det finns olika anledningar till att färre röstade på Clinton än på Obama. Hon upplevdes alltför mycket som en insider i kampen mot en populists vrålade krav på “förändring".
This election was a rejection of the status quo, which was all that Clinton promised. She literally embodied a continuation of the past 8 years. Given no other major-party alternative to the status quo,voters chose Trump because Trump enthusiastically promised an end to the status-quo.
Vad Trump egentligen menade med denna förändring vet vi inte än, men det blir sannolikt inte vad många av hans väljare trodde.
It’s the same reason why Republicans control a large majority in the House of Representatives despite receiving more than a million fewer total votes than their Democratic opponents: rural, white, Republican voters are more widely geographically distributed than urban Democratic voters. America has become a minority-ruled country, that minority being rural white Republicans.
Det är också anmärkningsvärt att trots tidiga prognoser om motsatsen så röstade totalt sett betydligt färre än i föregående presidentval. Trumps väljare är vita och i stor utsträckning äldre; bilderna visar tydligt att hur Trump dominerade dessa grupper.

Det är också tydligt att Trump var mycket bättre på att använda media för sina syften än vad medierna själva insåg. Trump använde de närvarande journalisterna inte för att de skulle informera om hans politik utan som en del av hans show, som Seth Stevenson skriver i “How Trump conned America”.
We were a vital element in Trump’s performance. He never once failed to invite his crowds to heckle us. He was placing us on display like captured animals.

The one notion shared by every wildly enthusiastic Trumpist I met—both in my earlier stint covering his campaign and in this last week on the trail—was a firm conviction that Donald Trump is on their side in a war against elites. That he’d fight for them in their battle against the preppy eggheads who run the government, the financial system, and the media. I heard it over and over.
Detta gjorde också att medierna med Fox News i spetsen ständigt rapporterade om Clintons email medan Trumps anti-muslimska förslag knappt rapporterades.
Oberoende och granskande media, som har på sin agenda driva journalistik som granskar makt och samhälle behövs. Det är inte samma som att enögt driva en linje, likt några av de skribenter jag pekade på i början. Vi har en en farlig utveckling i Sverige, där bristen på lokal journalistik lägger grunden för bubbelsamhälle och ekokammare. Att då lägga skulderna på journalister bor där det finns tidningar istället för skärskåda hur mediaföretagen har utvecklats verkar rätt märkligt.
A rigged election?
En av Trumps favoritteser under kampanjen var att valet var riggat, därför skulle han inte acceptera om valresultatet gick honom emot. Det är inte mycket som pekar på det, däremot finns det andra märkligheter i valutgången. Trump fick fler röster än vad alla opinionsundersökningar visade, medan Clinton fick ungefär så många som förväntat. Det kan ha berott på att Trump-väljare inte deltog i opinionsundersökningar eller dolde sina sympatier. Undervärdering av SD’s väljare har också varit ett problem i Sverige.

Men det finns andra delförklaringar. Siyanda Mohutsiwa har följt webbforum inom Alt-Right grupper och menar att inom dessa kretsar gjordes en medveten ansträngning för att dölja sympatier för Trump. Det var människor som inte brydde sig ett dugg om anklagelserna mot Trump för tex nedvärderande syn på kvinnor. Det väcker farhågor inför kommande val i Sverige, hur når vi de grupper som aldrig hör något annat än vad deras gelikar säger?
Sedan har vi då frågan om eventuellt rysk påverkan på valutgången. Att det finns klara
indikationer på ryskt inflytande är tydligt, tex genom Wikileaks väl planterade läckor. Efter valet har också Trumps kampanj erkänt att man haft mer omfattande kontakter med Ryssland än vad man tidigare har sagt. Men om det har funnits mer konkreta attacker mot det amerikanska valsystemet vet vi inte ännu även om det finns många märkligheter.
Med tanke på hur utsatt Sverige redan är för Cyberattacker så är det något vi bör ha i minnet.
Oavsett orsakerna till att Donald Trump blev vald kommer det att ha stora konsekvenser och bidra till en farligare värld med hetare motsättningar både bildligt och bokstavligt på grund av accelererande klimatförändringar, ett område där hans presidenttid kan få oöverstigliga och långsiktiga följder
I am writing this immediately after the American election night. A Trump presidency has turned from a dystopian illusion to a disastrous reality. What that will mean for the US and for the rest of the world is unclear, but the signs are not good, neither in the short term nor in the long run.
For the fight to preserve a liveable climate, four years with Trump will have effects that will linger on for decades if not centuries. We know that for the third year in a row 2016 will be the warmest year ever globally. There is no time to loose for us in the transition to a carbon free world. Plains economics will make even Trump unable to turn coal into gold, due to the fact the markets have understood that wind and solar are better economic alternative. But with Trump as president, USA will not be a driving force in the energy transition and will stall and disrupt necessary changes both domestically and internationally. By the time Florida starts to flood, it might be to late to reverse the effects of the damage done.
In Europe, Trumps fondness of Putin and threat to withdraw from NATO will likely destabilise security and increase risks of conflicts. For Sweden, we need to understand that we will need to rely on our strength even more and increase spending on both military and civil defence. Hopefully security can be built in collaboration with our Nordic neighbours, but in a “Big Boys” chest thumping between Trump and Putin, small countries like the in the Baltic may well be seen as expandable pawns.
A big question is what will happen to the economy. Trumps protectionist agenda has already sent the stock market falling and there are dire predictions about what will happen now. While Trump has no solutions based on his “business" experience we must understand is that the economy and the effects of globalisation is something that has fuelled the anger that has propelled Trump to his success. Main stream politicians in USA and Europe have failed to grasp the insecurity and fear that have come with the changes brought by modernisation, digitalisation and automation. An inside candidate what not what these people sought and they stopped listening to experts.
Then there is racism, a factor that has not gone away in the US, something Sarah Kendzior has written about as she has tried to warn her colleagues in the press about what they have been dealing with. Racism is propping up is ugly head also here in Sweden and Europe; many with that agenda will feel vindicated by Trumps victory.
Hope is not a given. At this dark time, we need to create hope, by organising and resisting, by finding strength from new coalitions rather than trying more of the same. Sarah Kendzior wrote about Elijah Parish Lovejoy, a journalist who was murdered by a racist mob in 1837. Anticipating his own death Lovejoy proclaimed, "there is no excuse for deserting your post”.
Today was November 6th or “Gustaf Adolfs Day” as it is locally called in remembrance of King Gustaf Adolf the 2nd. There are no parades on this day, the festivities are reduced to eating a special cake and few people spend any length of time thinking about a king who died doing battle in Germany during the 17th century. But he did inaugurate the city of Gothenburg in 1621 so thanks to him we have a 400 years jubilee to look forward to in 2021.
Since 2001, November 6th is also declared by the United Nations as the “International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict”. It’s a sad situation that we need such a day, but looking at ongoing conflicts in e.g. Iraq and Syria, it is clear that the environment is also a collateral casualty in wars. Moreover, wars are often fought over resources, be it water, oil, food or access to coasts and ports such as the case in the Russian invasion of Crimea. Not that we really need wars to disrupt the environment, this compilation shows that we are disrupting the global ecosystems at a blistering speed even in “peaceful” times. Furthermore, the impact goes both ways, changing climate causes resource conflicts and conflicts depletes the resources we badly need to innovate and transform societies in order to reach a future free of carbon emissions. So while I understand and accept that it’s necessary to increase defence spending due to Russias aggressive manoeuvring, it is sad that we can not spend the brains and money on building the low energy future we need.
In two days, it will be November 8th and finally the US presidential election season will be over (for this time). We will learn which of the candidates that prevailed in the dirtiest election ever. It shouldn’t really be possible that a bullying, lying, narcissist with lack of self control like Donald Trump could be elected president of the United States. Just thinking about a scenario where he has control over the nuclear weapon codes gives me nightmares. However his opponent Hillary Clinton fits just too well into the caricature of the “insider” that populist like Trump but also our European right wing parties likes to portray. It is clear, from the rise of Trump and also from Brexit, that leaders in many of our liberal democracies have failed to grasp the effects of globalisation and likewise failed to provide a vision of future that is fair, equitable and truly sustainable.
Therefore, if Donald Trump looses there is no reason to be jubilant for Hillary Clinton even though she has made some pledges to be more green. Instead there needs to be mobilisation that brings together both environmental champions and social activists in order to create a just and inclusive future. But this movement also needs to change, in order to embrace the growing part of business that also want to strive for just future. We need both the grassroots, the science geeks and the innovators and we need them now.
Should Donald Trump win, I fear that there will be more wars in Europe in the coming decade
