A short rant on (all) religions
The roots of modern medicine can be traced back to ancient Greece and the Hippocratic Oath in it’s modernised form is still something that doctors stand for; to treat the ill to the best of one's ability, to preserve a patient's privacy, to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation, and so on. Still no sane physician today would rely on the knowledge from 2500 years ago when actually performing his or her duty, since science has provided us with totally different tools to understand, prevent and treat disease. So why should we in todays modern societies rely on and to the word hold sacred what prophets, apostles, deities and their descendants are supposed to have said thousands of years ago? Words, that we also know have been rewritten and interpreted to fit different societal context during the time passed. Yes, there may be grains of philosophical truth in theses different religions (christianity, islam, hinduism, jewish, buddism etc), in the same manner as the basic understanding of anatomy was known by the Greek doctors. But we live in different times and must learn to live with each other, understanding what constitutes us as human beings without seeking the shelter of antiquated scribblings from the past.
